Odisha To Launch Rs 500 Cr Waterfront Development Scheme For Sustainable Urban Growth

Bhubaneswar: In a major step to promote sustainable urban development, the Odisha Cabinet on Monday approved a Waterfront Development Scheme to be implemented over a period of five years with a total outlay of Rs 500 crore.

Officials said the scheme aims at rejuvenating riverfronts and urban water bodies in selected cities across the state, transforming them into vibrant, accessible and environmentally sustainable public spaces.

The Housing & Urban Development Department has been authorized to undertake comprehensive planning, e

xecution and coordination of the programme in collaboration with Development Authorities and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).

The initiative is designed to restore ecological balance while improving the quality of life in urban centres. The scheme envisages the creation of continuous, inclusive and people-friendly waterfront spaces that can be enjoyed by residents, visitors and local communities, an official statement said after the Cabinet meeting.

The programme aims to restore and rejuvenate river ecosystems through sustainable interventions, while enhancing urban life by developing accessible public spaces. It is also expected to promote tourism, cultural activities and local economic development in the areas covered under the scheme.

Additionally, the initiative will focus on conserving and promoting cultural heritage, traditional practices and local art forms associated with waterfront regions. The government said the project will also strengthen climate resilience through improved flood management measures and adaptive infrastructure.

The scheme further seeks to ensure social inclusion by creating safe and accessible spaces for people from all sections of society.
