Odisha To Seek Changes To Amended Motor Vehicle Act

Bhubaneswar: A day after violent clash erupted between locals and the police in the Odisha capital over hefty traffic fines, the ruling BJD on Sunday said that the state would write to the Centre for some amendments to the new Motor Vehicles Act 2019.

BJD MLA Pratap Deb said that the proposal will soon be sent to the Centre along with the concerns raised by the people regarding implementation of the Act.

Notably, Rajasthan, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh have sought more time to implement the revised penalties.

Congress MLA Suresh Routray said that the state government implemented the Act in a hurry. He also alleged that 90 per cent vehicles of Odisha police do not have licence and demanding changes in the Act.

BJP leader Prithviraj Harichandan also termed the fine collection as exploitation. He said police are robbing the poor of their savings in form of fines.
