Bhubaneswar: Facing the problem of lack of deep freezers, the AIIMS at Bhubaneswar has procured containers from Paradip Port to preserve the bodies of the victims of train accident in Odisha’s Balasore district.

Speaking to media persons in Bhubaneswar on Monday, executive director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Ashutosh Biswas said the institute had received 123 bodies from the accident site and already 43 of them have been identified and handed over to their families after following due procedure.

“Since the process of handing over the bodies to bonafide claimants would take some time, we are facing the problem of their preservation. Our major task now is on embalming the bodies and keeping those in su-zero temperature for preservation,” he said.

He further said no hospital in the city has adequate deep freezers to preserve so many bodies. Hence they chalked out a plan on instructions from Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya who took stock of the situation after the train mishap.

“As per the plan, we have procured 5 containers from Paradip port. One container can keep 30 to 40 bodies,” he added.

Of 80 bodies presently with the AIIMS, the identification of 15 to 16 bodies has been completed and they will be handed over to the families. The identification process of the rest bodies is still going on, Biswas said.
