Odisha University Of Health Sciences With Headquarters In Bhubaneswar Established Today

Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has ordered March 5 as the day of establishment of Odisha University of Health Sciences for imparting universal quality health education in allopathy, homeopathy, ayurveda, nursing, lab technology, and all other paramedical sciences in the state, coinciding with the 107th birth anniversary of Biju Patnaik.

The Odisha University of Health Sciences will have headquarters in Bhubaneswar, the notification issued by Health and Family Welfare Department said.

According to an official release, all the medical and allied health science colleges/institutions will beaffiliated to Odisha University of Health Sciences, Bhubaneswar, from the academic session 2023-24. “All colleges offering under graduate and post graduate degree courses in health sciences starting from modern medicine, dental science, ayurveda, homoeopathy, nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, and other allied health science courses will now come under its ambit,” it said.

The decision to set up the health university was taken to streamline the medical education system as a number of medical institutions were coming up in the state and it will further value and enhance the quality of medical education, patient care and research, it added.

Proposed in early 2000s, the by-laws and rules for the university were submitted to the government by an expert committee in 2005. The bill titled Odisha University of Health Sciences Act, 2021, was cleared by the Assembly on September 3, 2021. The process to identify a suitable site for the proposed university began six months later. Dean and Principal of SCB Medical College and Hospital Prof Dr Datteswar Hota was appointed as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to oversee initial functioning of the university. The Act came into force in April 2022.

More than 100 medical institutions starting from nursing to medical colleges and pharmacy allied medical science to physiotherapy will come under its ambit. While the de-affiliation and affiliation process will take at least six months, the syllabus and examination pattern of different universities will be clubbed together to introduce a uniform syllabus, sources added.
