Bhubaneswar: Four persons including three former government officials and a former sarpanch were convicted in corruption cases by Vigilance courts in separate places of the state on Thursday.
According to a release of Vigilance Directorate, Cuttack, the Court of Special Judge, Vigilance, Berhampur convicted Santosh Kumar Patra, former junior engineer, R & B Division-I, Berhampur in Ganjam district in a case filed against him for possession of disproportionate assets worth Rs 13,25,261 and sentenced him to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 3 years and pay a fine of Rs 20,000. In default of payment of fine, Patra would undergo rigorous imprisonment for a further period of 6 months.
In another case, the Court of Special Judge, Vigilance, Jeypore in Koraput convicted Barindra Majhi, former PEO and Haribandhu Majhi, former sarpanch, both of Kosagumuda panchayat in Nabarangpur district in a case of reflecting false payment in the panchayat cash book without execution of the works and thereby misappropriating an amount of Rs 4,57,305.
The court sentenced both of them to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 2 years and pay a fine of Rs 20,000 each. In default of payment of fine, they have to undergo further rigorous imprisonment for 3 months.
Similarly, the Court of Special Judge, Vigilance, Cuttack convicted Kartika Chandra Biswal, former Consolidation Officer, Grade-II (Peskar), Chainpal in Cuttack district in a case of accepting illegal gratification of Rs 100 for him and Rs 1,000 for his senior officer from a complainant for favourably deciding a consolidation case.
The court sentenced him to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 2 years and pay a fine of Rs 5,000. In default of payment of fine, he has to undergo further rigorous imprisonment for 1 year.
