Bhubaneswar: Odisha Vigilance officials on Wednesday apprehended Biswanath Adhek, a Surgery Specialist at Badamba Community Health Centre (CHC) in Cuttack district, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs. 2,000.
An official release said that the amount was the second installment of an overall demand of Rs 5,000 in exchange for issuing a favourable post-mortem report for the complainant’s deceased son and assuring favorable testimony in court during the trial.
The accused had previously received Rs 2,000 from the complainant a few days ago. Left with no other option, the complainant, who is financially disadvantaged, reported the matter to the Vigilance authorities.
Acting on the complaint, the Vigilance team set a trap and apprehended the doctor while he was accepting the bribe of Rs. 2,000 on Wednesday.
The bribe amount has been recovered from Adhek’s possession and seized as evidence. Following the arrest, simultaneous searches are being conducted at two locations to investigate the possibility of disproportionate assets (DA).
The anti-corruption agency has registered a case against the doctor at the Cuttack Vigilance police station under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act of 2018. Further investigations are underway.
