Bhubaneswar: Several areas were inundated in Odisha’s Bhadrak district as the water level of Baitarani and Salandi rivers continued to rise on Monday, worsening the plight of people in many villages.
The water level of Baitarani river, which has breached the danger mark near Akhuapada, continued to rise. The water level in the river stood at 18.66 metre as against the danger mark of 17.83 metre, official sources said.
Vast stretch of agricultural land and paddy fields in several villages under Chandbali, Tihidi, Dhamanagar and Bhandari Pokhari blocks of the district were inundated by flood water, they said.
People living in villages located along the two rivers, which are in spate following heavy downpour over the last few days, had to encounter enormous difficulty as the flood water entered human settlements. The tributaries of the two rivers also entered the riverside villages and some urban areas.
The water levels of tributary rivers like Reva, Kapali, Genguti and Kochila have also risen, submerging paddy fields and farmland. The district administration has shifted several people from low-lying areas of Bhadrak town to different shelter centres.
