Keonjhar: A woman allegedly consumed poison in a bid to end her life on Sunday morning, hours after the death of her husband in an elephant attack in Bhuinya Juang Pada forest range under Keonjhar forest division in Odisha.

The deceased, Debadhi Barik of Govindpur village under Banspal block, came in the path of a tusker on Saturday night as villagers were attempting to shoo away a herd of seven elephants, which strayed into the area and caused damage to paddy crops. He was critically injured and was taken to Keonjhar district headquarters hospital (DHH), where he succumbed during treatment.

Devastated by the news, his wife, Rukmini Barik, consumed poison. She was initially admitted to Telkoi hospital before being transferred to the DHH, where her condition remains critical.
