Jagatsinghpur: To avenge the death of her pet goat, a woman allegedly poisoned about 25 crows, 20 dogs and three cats at Bakharpur village under Tirtol police limits of Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district.
An FIR has been filed against the accused, Dukhi Barik (45). While Tirtol police have begun a probe, no arrest has been made yet so far.
According to sources, Dukhi’s goat was attacked by a stray dog on Monday which led to its death. Unable to bear the loss, an enraged Barik allegedly added poison to food and used it as a bait to attract birds and animals in the vicinity. Bodies of crows, dogs and cats were found scattered across Chatra Math, Bakharpur, Amirpur and other nearby localities on Tuesday morning sending shockwaves in the area.
The villagers suspect that she had strewn dead goat’s meat mixed with poison. “We saw her infuriated after her pet was attacked and it is her handiwork which will be proved after investigation,” said Narayan Nanda, who lodged a complaint against her at Tirtol police station.
Inspector-in-charge (IIC) Abhimanyu Nayak told the media that the dead animals had been sent to the local veterinary hospital for postmortem.
