Soro (Balasore): This conniving aunt was certainly not the ‘sagi mausi’ from ‘Sholay’ because she tried to sell off her married niece to a man for Rs 2 lakh. The niece, who got wind of her cunning aunt’s plan sought police help and was finally reunited with her husband from Rajasthan after 10 months.

Anjali Das, an orphan was living with her maternal aunt, Gouri Barik of Balasore Sadar Police Station (PS) limits. She was married off to Pawan Sharma of Sikar district, Rajasthan.

Anjali came back home four months after marriage and got stuck due to the coronavirus lockdown. It was then that her aunt laid a trap to sell her off. However, Anjali played smart and sought the help of the Sadar PS following which she was sent to a short stay shelter in Soro.

Recounting her ordeal, Anjali Sharma told the media, “When I was five years old, my parents died and my aunt had brought me up here. I used to accompany her to Puri and Balasore. When I turned 19 years old, I got married and went to Rajasthan. After staying with my in-laws for four months, I had come to my aunt here when she attempted to get me married once again. I could manage to escape and informed the Sadar police here everything. My aunt had taken Rs 2 lakhs as she had intended to sell me off to another man.”

“The Sadar police contacted then my husband. He told the police to keep me safe as the lockdown had been imposed. The police left me under the custody of this Ashram. My husband has come and I’ll be returning to Rajasthan with him,” she beamed.

And they lived happily ever after!
