Mayurbhanj: In a display of extraordinary courage, a woman in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district fought off a wild bear with an axe to rescue her severely injured husband while in a forest to collect leaves.

The incident took place on Tuesday at Milu village under Karanjia block.

The couple – Malde Soren and Lili Soren – came across

a group of six wild bear in the forest and one among them charged at Malde, mauling him viciously and inflicting serious injuries, including deep scalp wounds. Rather than fleeing, Lili stood her ground and confronted the aggressive animal, striking it repeatedly with a tangia, a traditional axe-like tool commonly used by locals. Her brave counterattack injured the bear, forcing it to retreat back into the forest, Ranger of Karanjia Forest Range Prasant Kumar Swain was quoted as saying by NDTV.

Local emergency services responded promptly, rushing him to a nearby hospital. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was subsequently transferred to a more advanced medical facility in Keonjhar district for specialised care, it added.
