Surat/Bhubaneswar: Police have arrested a man in connection with the murder of 25-year-old Debashish Behera from Odisha’s Ganjam in Surat.
The accused, identified as Shyam Lal Jaiswal from Uttar Pradesh, has admitted to the crime, Deputy Commissioner Police (DCP) Surat Bhagirath Gadbi told media.
According to police, Shyam Lal and Debashish quarreled on Thursday over sleeping space on the pavement of Bombay Market where they lived. An agitated Shyam Lal attacked Debashish the same night with a sharp knife which led to his death. The accused was on the run following the incident.
Police had to check footage of 175 CCTV cameras, raided different places, and took the help of Surat Crime Branch to nab the culprit. He was arrested on Saturday.
Shyam Lal earned his livelihood as a vendor in local daily markets (haat). Acting on a tip, police arrested him from a market while he was working.
