Berhampur: A youth was assaulted and tonsured for allegedly stealing an idol from a temple at Chanameri village under Digapahandi block in Ganjam district on Sunday.
According to sources, Suduru Choudhury was caught red-handed by the villagers while he was trying to steal the idol of Goddess Parvati from Kapileswar temple.
The villagers later tied him to an electric police and mercilessly beat him up. His head was then tonsured and he was paraded through the village with a garland of shoes around his neck.
On receiving information, Digapahandi police rushed to the spot and rescued Suduru from the clutches of the villagers. He was later admitted to Digapahandi Community Health Centre (CHC).
The entire incident was recoded by some villagers and uploaded on social media.
