Odisha Zoo Welcomes Dead Langur’s Baby

Bhubaneswar: A day after the death of a male Nilgiri langur, Nandankanan Zoological Park welcomed a baby langur, who was born on Saturday morning.

The ailing langur, who died at the zoo on Friday, is the father of the newborn.

According to sources, the female Nilgiri langur delivered a baby langur at enclosure 55. Both mother and baby langur are doing fine.

A couple of days after the death of India’s only orangutan, Nandankanan lost another inmate, a male Nilgiri langur.

According to the zoo sources, the 17-year-old langur was suffering from diarrhoea and fever and immediately shifted to an isolation ward of the zoo hospital for treatment. It showed improvement on May 19. The treatment was carried out in consultation with Centre for Wildlife Health. The health committee examined the langur again on May 28.

However, it breathed its last on Friday morning. While the death is being attributed to possible nerve disorder, the exact cause of death can be ascertained after the postmortem, the sources added.

Notably, the langur was brought to Nandankanan from Arignar Anna Zoological Park, Chennai, on September 26, 2017.
