Odisha’s Abhishek Mohapatra Dies After 3-Month-Long ECMO Treatment In Kolkata

Bhubaneswar: Abhishek Mohapatra of Odisha’s Bhadrak died due to post-COVID complications on Friday night after undergoing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) treatment in Kolkata for around three months.

Barely a month after his marriage, the 28-year-old had tested positive for COVID and was admitted to Kalinga Hospital, Bhubaneswar, on May 18. He was shifted to the ICU on May 20. He was on 100 per cent oxygen support and suffering from pneumonia, following which his family appealed for funds.

The doctors have suggested ECMO support as the only course of treatment left with a near-certain lung transplant as the next step, the post by his brother on milaap.org said.

Critically-ill Abhishek was finally airlifted to Kolkata on June 7 after the family collected Rs.3,508,957 of Rs. 1 crore needed for the air ambulance and his treatment. Around Rs 1.5 lakh a day was spent on his treatment.

He was among the first few to have been airlifted outside the state for ECMO treatment. The facility is now available in SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack and AIIMS-Bhubaneswar.

In August, former Odisha Youth Congress president Sangram Keshari Jena had succumbed to post-COVID complications at a hospital in Hyderabad. He was airlifted to the private healthcare facility on May 23 for ECMO treatment after his condition deteriorated.
