Berhampur: Berhampur University (BU) in Odisha is all set to launch a recreational space, named ‘Nagar Vatika’, by transforming its former deer park into a modern eco-friendly zone.
The project, developed at a cost of Rs 10 lakh in an area of one acre, is in its final stages of completion.
“The Nagar Vatika will offer multiple recreational facilities, including a yoga space, trekking paths, selfie-points and bird watching areas,” BU vice-chancellor Geetanjali Dash was quoted by TOI as saying. She conducted a site inspection on Sunday. Besides university staff, their families and students, the park will also be open to outside visitors.
The site, previously home to over 60 spotted deer until December 2019, had remained unused after the Central Zoo Authority cancelled its deer park license. The deer were subsequently relocated to Lakhari Valley wildlife sanctuary on the Ganjam-Gajapati district border.
While the forest department was initially tasked with the development, the university later decided to undertake the project independently to expedite its completion. The aim is to create a pollution-free environment where people can relax in natural surroundings.
Over 6,000 plants, including medicinal, flowering and ornamental varieties, have been planted. The park will feature a fountain and a bio-organic compost machine for processing biodegradable waste. Visitors can expect a mini-jungle experience within the university campus as the project is scheduled for completion by the end of February, said an official.
