Cuttack: Noted freedom fighter Nialamani Samal passed away on Saturday at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack city following age-related ailments. He was 102.
The centenarian freedom fighter, who was undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit (ICU) at SCBMCH, breathed his last on Saturday, family sources said.
Samal was admitted to SCBMCH a few days ago after suffering a massive brain stroke. His condition is stated to be critical. He was provided treatment by a four-member expert committee of specialist doctors.
Samal, who hailed from Balichandrapur village in Badachana block of Jajpur district, was the president of All India Freedom Fighters Association. He had been imprisoned for three years during the freedom struggle.
He had been conferred with the President’s Award twice and also felicitated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
