Guwahati: Javelin thrower Dhanmati Xess struck gold on the opening day of the 37th National Junior Athletics Championship here on Friday.
Dhanmati topped the girls’ U-20 javelin event with an effort of 40.64 metres.
It was, however, short of her personal best of 42.32 metres. Interestingly, that performance was at the same venue, which fetched her bronze medal in the 2020 Khelo India Youth Games.
It was Odisha’s first medal at the Junior Nationals, which will continue till November 15.
The 19-year-old Dhanmati is part of a 39-strong Odisha squad taking part in the meet.
