Kendrapara: Geo-synthetic tubes, installed to tackle sea erosion near Petha in Kendrapara district, caught fire late on Saturday.
According to sources, locals spotted thick smoke billowing from the area and immediately alerted the fire department while making attempts to control the flames.
Fire tenders from Pattamundai were then rushed to the spot to contain the fire.
Though the actual reason behind the fire was yet to be ascertained, 200 metre of the 506 metre-long geo-tube wall was reportedly gutted in the incident.
However, there were no reports of any casualty, the sources added.
Notably, the geo-tube wall, the first project under World Bank-funded Integrated Coastal Zone Management Programme in Odisha to stop the ingress of tidal waves, was installed at an estimated Rs 33 crore in 2016.
