Sambalpur: Hirakud Dam authorities in Odisha’s Sambalpur district opened three more sluice gates to release excess water following considerable rise in the Mahanadi River flow.
Officials said excess water from the reservoir is now being discharged through eight gates of the dam. Of the eight gates, five are on the left side and three on the right. The current reservoir water level stands at 629.56 feet against the full reservoir capacity of 630 feet.
Gates are being opened keeping in view the reservoir water level and the inflow from the upper catchment area following heavy rain. With the opening of more gates, the administration is also closely monitoring the water flow in the downstream of Mahanadi.
People living in the riverside and low-lying areas have been advised to remain alert and follow updates regarding the water level and further instructions from the administration.
Meanwhile, all three gates of the Indravati reservoir have been closed. However, one gate of the Muran dam remains open for discharge of water, official sources said.
