Bhawanipatna: Kalahandi University in Odisha will now be known as Maa Manikeswari University, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced on Wednesday.
Speaking at an event in Bhawanipatna to launch the much-hyped LAccMI scheme to provide affordable transport network in the district, the Chief Minister announced the new name of the university. Naveen also greeted the people of the state on Kalahandi Foundation Day, describing the occasion as historic.
Inaugurating the scheme at the Kalahandi University campus, the Chief Minister said the university will be named after Goddess Manikeswari, the reigning deity of Kalahandi district.
It may be noted here that the Odisha government had accorded university status to Bhawanipatna Autonomous College in 2019 by altering the territorial jurisdiction of Sambalpur University under the provisions of Odisha Universities Act. The varsity was then named as Kalahandi University.
Highlighting the development of the district, the Chief Minister said Kalahandi is a model for all in the field of transformation. Improvements in education, health communication, infrastructure, industry, and agriculture have made the dreams of the people of Kalahandi come true.
