Cuttack: Padma Shri recipent social worker D Prakash Rao was cremated with full state honours at Kaliaboda crematorium here on Thursday. The funeral pyre was lit by his daughter.
Rao, who had been undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital since December 14 last year, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 63,
In course of his treatment, Rao was diagnosed as COVID-19 positive on December 25. Though he recovered from COVID-19, he developed serious complications after a brain stroke.
According to doctors, his oxygen saturation suddenly dipped and despite all efforts, he breathed his last on Wednesday afternoon.
The renowned social worker, who owned a tea stall at Buxi Bazaar in the city, had been providing free education to slum children through his school ‘Asha O Ashwasana’ since 2000.
In recognition of his exemplary service to society, Rao was conferred with the Padma Shri by President Ram Nath Kovind in March 2020.
