Rourkela: Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has bagged the prestigious CSR Award of Greentech Foundation for outstanding achievement in promotion of education.
The award was presented during the 7th Annual CSR India Summit- 2020 held virtually on Thursday. The steel plant bagged the award for promoting education among the underprivileged children staying in and around the Steel City.
The RSP has set up Deepika Ispat Sikshya Sadan which has more than 600 children studying in Class I to X. This free school is being managed by Deepika Mahila Sanghati, a leading philanthropic organisation of the city.
Provisions of quality mid-day meal, free books and dress materials have contributed a lot to good retention and almost zero dropouts of children from school. The school has also witnessed a steady increase in the girl students who now account for 55% of the student strength. This has brought in a positive change in the perception of women’s education in the slums, where traditionally the girl child takes up unskilled jobs from a very young age.
Former Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra was the chairman of the Evaluation Committee of the award.
