Bhubaneswar: Veteran politician and former Jagatsinghpur MP Trilochan Kanungo passed away while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Odisha capital on Friday. He was 83.
According to sources, the three-time MLA and one-time MP from the BJD had been undergoing treatment at the hospital since March 30. He breathed his last around 7 am.
Kanungo was elected to the Lok Sabha from Jagatsinghpur Parliamentary constituency in 1999. He gained popularity as Chairperson of Cuttack municipality (1979-80 and 1992-95) to which he was elected twice. He was known to be a scholarly politician. He was chairman of second Odisha Finance Commission.
Kanungo was a student leader and president of the erstwhile Ravenshaw College and Utkal University in 1960s.
He is the elder brother of former finance minister Panchanan Kanungo, who joined the Congress in 2019.
Kanungo was residing in Sheikh Bazaar area of Cuttack city for the last few years.
