New Delhi: Odisha’s Tanvi Patri created badminton history at the Dakar Youth Olympics, becoming the first Indian woman to win a singles medal at the Games after settling for silver in a thrilling final in Senegal.
The 15-year-old Indian pushed China’s Zhang Yi Xin, the reigning world junior champion, all the way before losing 15-21, 21-13, 26-24 after an hour and 22 minutes.
Tanvi showed remarkable nerve in the deciding game, rescuing six match points and later holding three chances to seal the gold herself. However, Zhang’s experience proved decisive in the end.
How The Match Unfolded
Tanvi started slowly but found her rhythm in the first game, reeling off seven consecutive points to turn a 3-5 deficit into a 10-5 lead. Her accurate punch tosses and sharp work at the net helped her take the opening game in 25 minutes.
The second game began well for the Indian as she raced to a 4-0 advantage. But the drift from behind began to disturb her clears, allowing Zhang to seize momentum after the interval and force a third game.
In the decider, Zhang’s signature cross-court drops gave her a commanding 19-10 lead. Tanvi refused to give up, reducing the margin to 19-15, but a mistake on a cross-court smash handed her rival five match points. Tanvi saved all five and even earned three opportunities to finish the match, before Zhang held firm.
Recognition And Legacy
Before Tanvi, only HS Prannoy in 2010 and Lakshya Sen in 2018 had won individual silver medals for India at the Youth Olympics. Sen had also been part of Team Alpha, which won the mixed team gold with players from eight nations.
Applauding her achievement, Badminton Association of India General Secretary said, “Tanvi Patri has made the entire nation proud with a historic achievement at the Youth Olympic Games. Winning a silver medal at just 15 is an extraordinary accomplishment and a moment of immense pride for India.
“Her fighting spirit, composure and performances throughout the competition reflect the immense potential of our young sporting generation. This achievement is a significant milestone for Indian sport and a testament to the growing presence of our athletes on the global stage. On behalf of the Badminton Association of India and its member colleagues, I congratulate Tanvi and everyone who has supported her journey,” he added.
