Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has directed the police to set up a helpline number to help the students who are subjected to ragging in higher educational institutions in the state.

The OHRC has issued the interim recommendation to the Director General of Police after convener of Ragging Free Campus Abhiyan (RFCA) Tejeswar Parida filed several petitions against ragging. Parida had sought preventive measures by the state government to stop the menace.

“The commission is inclined to make an interim recommendation to the DG and the IG of Police, Odisha for setting up an anti-ragging 24×7 helpline number in the Human Rights Protection Cell to effectively curb the menace of ragging,” TNIE quoted the OHRC order as stating.

The OHRC also ordered that its agency would investigate the ragging of an ANM student in the hostel of a training centre in Deogarh district headquarters hospital campus. Terming its ‘very shocking’, it directed the police to hand over the records to Additional DGP (OHRC) to inquire and submit a report within one month.

On the suicide of a student of BJB College in Bhubaneswar allegedly due to ragging, the Commission set next hearing on August 29. The Police Commissioner has submitted its report on the case to the OHRC.
