Bhubaneswar: Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) on Monday directed the Crime Branch and Southern Range RDC to conduct a probe into the death of criminal Balaram Mallick alias Chagala in a recent police encounter.
OHRC has asked the officials concerned to submit a report within six weeks of conducting a thorough investigation to ascertain the circumstances under which the criminal was allegedly gunned down by the cops.
Chagala was killed in an exchange of fire with the police at Nabaghanpur village under Sadar police limits in Nayagarh district on July 5.
The criminal had sustained bullet injuries on both his legs and was rushed to the district headquarters hospital. He was later shifted to SCB Medical College and a hospital in Cuttack where he succumbed to his injuries.
Chagala was a close aide of gangster Tito, who was arrested after a similar encounter with the Special Task Force (STF) of Odisha Crime Branch near Chandikhole of Jajpur district with police on June 30.
