New Delhi: The farmers’ agitation against the contentious farm laws is gathering steam with, more celebrities lending their support.
Boxer Vijender Singh, an Olympic medallist, pitched in on Sunday, saying that he will return his Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award if the Centre doesn’t withdraw the ‘black laws’.
“If the government does not withdraw the black laws, I will return my Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award,” news agency ANI quoted Vijender Singh as saying.
Vijender, who is now a professional boxer, tried his hand at politics last year, but lost in the Lok Sabha election on a Congress ticket from South Delhi constituency.
Vijender apart, several other eminent personalities from Punjab have thrown their weight behind the farmers. Among sportspersons who joined the protest at Delhi-Singhu border were Arjuna awardees Rajbir Kaur and Gurmail Singh, former wrestler Kartar Singh, ex-boxer Jaipal Singh and Dhyan Chand Award winner Ajit Singh.
Thousands of farmers, mostly from Punjab, have been protesting at five Delhi border points for the last 11 days. They have been demanding that the Central government repeal the three laws which, they feel, will allow big corporations to exploit them.
