Thiruvananthapuram: A major outbreak of Omicron in India is less than a month away, feels a COVID-19 panel expert.

Dr TS Anish, member of the Kerala COVID-19 Expert Committee, is of the opinion that the spread of coronavirus’ new variant cannot be prevented as it multiplies every two days, so every effort should be made so that the situation doesn’t get out of hand.

“Global trends show that the number of Omicron cases is going to reach 1000 in 2-3 weeks and one million, maybe, in 2 months. We don’t have more than a month before a major outbreak happens in India. We need to prevent this,” Dr Anish was quoted as saying by ANI.

Observing that expatriates account for most Omicron cases in the country, Dr Anish said, “We cannot prevent the infections from spreading in India. We have one month time to reactivate our system so that the number of infections are not getting out of hand.”

Issuing a warning, he added: “Even if we are placing our system on time, even then, in a country like India, the risk of spreading of Omicron cases is much wider and large.”

The Central government has been taking steps to arrest rapid spread of Omicron.

As of Saturday morning, 415 people have been detected with the highly transmissible strain of coronavirus in India.
