Cuttack: The Commissionerate Police on Thursday arrested one person in connection with the firing incident during a feast at Nuapada Press colony here the previous evening, which claimed the life of a 32-year-old man.
The deceased was identified as Soumyaranjan Jena, a resident of the area.
Speaking to the media, Cuttack DCP Rishikesh Khilari said that the incident took place around 3.30 pm when Jena and three others, including the assailants, were consuming alcohol during a feast at an abandoned government quarter. A heated argument erupted between Jena and two others, fuelled by intoxication and possibly stemming from prior disputes, including a past relationship issue. I
n a sudden fit of rage, one of the men pulled out a firearm and fired at Jena from close range, striking him in the chest and stomach. Jena collapsed immediately, causing panic among those present. Locals rushed him to SCB Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Madhupatna police responded swiftly, collecting key evidence from the scene, including a pistol, cartridge cases, liquor bottles, drugs, and CCTV footage, along with other scientific evidence. Statements of witnesses, including those who transported the victim to the hospital, were also recorded.
With the main accused still at large, multiple teams have been formed and a manhunt launched to nab him, the DCP added.
Police sources further stated that they would write to the administration to demolish an abandoned house in Press Colony linked to the incident.
Earlier in the day, tension prevailed outside Madhupatna police station as family members, along with relatives and neighbours, staged a protest by placing the body of the deceased, seeking immediate arrest of the culprits.
