One Detained After Odisha Man Consumes Poison Over Public Humiliation Of Daughter In Kangaroo Court

Bhadrak: A man allegedly died by suicide by consuming poison following public humiliation of his daughter during a kangaroo court proceeding in Odisha’s Bhadrak district.

According to sources, the unlawful gathering under Bansada police limits was allegedly convened by villagers who accused the family of being involved in illicit sale of liquor. They vandalised their house, including a local shop run by the daughter. Some women also hurled abuses at her, dragged her out of the shop and publicly humiliated her by parading her through the village and marketplace, leaving the family deeply distressed.

The kangaroo court also slapped a fine and forcibly took Rs 10,

000 before allowing her to return home.

Unable to bear the trauma inflicted upon his child, the father, Lambudar Tarei, allegedly consumed poison. Though he was rushed to a hospital, he could not survive.

Speaking to the media, Additional SP of Bhadrak Arup Abhishek Behera on Tuesday said that one person has been detained in connection with the incident on the basis of a complaint filed at Bansada police station. “The family alleged that the kangaroo court in their village slapped a fine on them over illicit liquor sale. This led to the death of a person. Accordingly, a case has been registered at Bansada police station and SDP Chandbali has been appointed as the investigating officer,” he added.

Meanwhile, Chandabali SDPO Prabhas Sahoo visited the complainant’s house and initiated a detailed investigation. The shoe garland used during the incident has been seized and a forensic team is at the spot to help gather evidence.

This incident has sparked outrage in Bhadrak, with locals condemning the misuse of kangaroo courts that operate outside the law.
