Angul/Dhenkanal: One person was killed and another seriously injured in an attack by wild elephants in two districts of Odisha on Friday.
According to sources, one Maguni Behera (50) of Bajrakot village under Rengali police limits in Kaniha block of Angul district had gone to the pond when an elephant attacked him at around 5 am. He was critically injured in the attack. His family members rushed him to Kaniha Community Health Centre where he succumbed to injuries.
On being informed, Forest officials from Kaniha visited Bajrakot and assured his family of compensation of Rs 4 lakh. The district administration has also provided Rs 40,000 to the family for performing the last rites.
In the second incident, 75-year-old Sananta Nayak of Meramandali village under Motunga police limits in Dhenkanal district was also attacked by an elephant in the morning, the sources said.
Dhenkanal DFO Prakash Chand Gogineni said Sanatan, who sustained critical injuries in the attack by the elephant, is undergoing treatment at a government hospital in Meramundali.
