One Killed, Several Injured As Bus Overturns At Kalinga Ghat In Odisha’s Kandhamal

Bhubaneswar: One person died and several others were injured when a bus overturned and veered off the road, crashing through the roadside barrier, at Kalinga Ghat in Odisha’s Kandhamal district in the early hours of Friday.

According to sources, the accident took place at around 4.20 pm when the driver lost control over the vehicle while negotiating a sharp curve on the hilly stretch. The bus was traveling from Bargarh to Berhampur with around 24 passengers.

A woman passenger died on the spot, while over ten others sustained injuries. The rest of the passengers had reportedly alighted at different stops before the accident.

On being informed, police and Fire Service personnel from G Udayagiri and Bhanjanagar rushed to the spot and rushed the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment. “We received a call about the accident at around 4.30 am. The mishap had occurred in the Andharakoti region. We immediately reached the spot, and shortly after, a team from G Udayagiri and Bhanjanagar PCR also arrived at the spot. Some people had sustained head injuries, while others suffered fractures in legs. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals using fire trucks and other available vehicles,” a member of the Bhanjanagar Fire Department told the media.

While the identity of the deceased is yet to be ascertained, police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the mishap.
