Delhi: A fuel station attendant was killed and at least six others injured after the fuel tank of a truck exploded while being filled with compressed natural gas (CNG) in Delhi’s Tikri Kalan area on Wednesday afternoon.

One death was confirmed by the Delhi Police, as reported by IndiaTV.

The incident took place during CNG filling at the pump, authorities said. The injured persons were reportedly present at the fuel station when the blast occurred.

The truck that was being refuelled was carrying gas cylinders, India Today reported. It also said that there was a fire before the explosion occurred.

The incident was reported at 3.37 pm. People who were standing close to the truck sustained injuries in the explosion and were subsequently taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, the Delhi Fire Service said.

Six fire tenders were rushed to the spot. Firefighters took precautionary measures to ensure that the situation did not escalate further.

Officials said that the injured were transported to a nearby hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment. Further information about the condition of those injured is awaited, they said.

The exact reason behind the explosion is yet to be known. A fire service officer said an investigation will be undertaken to determine what caused the truck’s gas tank to explode during refuelling.

Fire service personnel sealed the pump and carried out necessary safety measures at the site. Officials are assessing the circumstances surrounding the incident as the probe continues.
