New Delhi: One of the names doing the rounds for the post of Congress president was Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot.
Senior leader Rahul Gandhi, however, made it clear on Thursday that the ‘one-man, one-post’ policy will be followed, as decided at the Chintan Shivir in Udaipur earlier this year.
Rahul, who is on a Bharat Jodo Yatra, said the Congress president ‘is not just an organizational position, it is an ideological post and a belief system’.
“What we decided at Udaipur, we expect that commitment to be maintained,” he said at a press conference in Kochi, referring to the one-man, one-post decision taken at the Chintan Shivir.
A day earlier, Congress election authority chief Madhusudan Mistry said that anyone can contest for Congress president. “In our constitution, there is nothing like one man, one post. Anyone can contest the election,” he had stated.
Rahul’s assertion changes the equation and sends a message to aspirants like Gehlot.
Reiterating his stand that he won’t contest for the presidentship on October 17, Rahul said whoever is elected must remember that he represents the ‘vision of India.’
“You’re taking a historic position which defines a particular view of India. Congress president is an ideological post. You represent a set of ideas, a belief system and vision of India,” was his advice to the next chief of the Grand Old Party.
