Bhubaneswar: Accurate forecast of an impending cyclone has helped Odisha contain the damage to life and property in the last few years, courtesy the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Be it Phailin, Fani or Amphan, the prediction of the Met office has been spot-on.
“We were personally satisfied with the way we successfully predicted cyclone Amphan genesis, track, landfall, wind speed and impact. It was a challenge for the team since Amphan was a super cyclone,” IMD Director-General (DG) Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said.
“Two Doppler Radars have been set up at Paradip and Gopalpur. Efforts are on to set up another Doppler Radar at Sambalpur,” he further said.
The IMD is currently using the radar of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) at Balasore. “If need be, a radar will be set up in this district,” he added.
“Our main objective is to provide hourly weather data to all the blocks across the country,” he pointed out.
