Bhubaneswar: One of two wallabies, procured by Nandanakanan Zoological Park near Bhubaneswar recently, died on Monday.
The zoo authorities had procured two wallabies, one male and another female, from a private source in Hyderabad on December 23, 2023.
The male wallaby fell sick and was undergoing treatment in the veterinary hospital in the zoo. But it succumbed during the treatment. The zoo authorities have sent its body to OUAT for post-mortem to ascertain the cause of death.
Wallaby is a small or middle-sized macropod native to Australia and New Guinea. It belongs to same family as kangaroos and some times the same genus.
While the kangaroos are bigger in size, the head and body length of wallaby is 45 to 105 cm and the tail measures 33 to 75 cm.
