New Delhi: Cinema halls have been shut throughout the country since lockdown was enforced on March 25. It is undoubtedly one of the worst-hit sectors during the pandemic.
Now, multiplex chain PVR Cinemas is upgrading safety norms with the hope of reopening soon. The company has invested around ₹6 crore across all its properties and is hoping that theatres will be allowed to reopen by the end of September.
“The cost (of investing in sanitization measures) is substantial but we’re also saving on a lot of hospitality functions, such as blankets or pillows. Plus, the number of food options has been reduced, so it kind of balances out,” Gautam Dutta, CEO, PVR Cinemas told LiveMint.
The interiors of halls will be fumigated with an electromagnetic pistol, whose effect reportedly lasts 30 days. Lobbies, seats and carpets will be sanitized after every show and masks and face shields will be the norm. There will be sanitizers at every corner.
Cinemas will run on 50 per cent capacity with a one-seat gap between viewers. PVR is going to use a completely contactless transaction system for booking tickets and ordering food, via their app. Physical tickets will not be sold at all.
There will be temperature checks at entrances. If anyone registers temperature more than normal, he or she will be denied entry.
Taps in washrooms will be fitted with sensors for touchless operation.
Food packaging will be sterilized in ultra violet (UV) cabinets before being served. The servings will be done in single-use disposable containers.
PVR is also redoing its airconditioning systems with Roof Mounted AC Package Unit that allows 20 per cent more fresh air intake.
