One System Weakens & Another Brewing In Bay: Rain Activity To Further Increase In Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Another active phase of the south-west monsoon has begun and back-to-back weather systems are expected trigger widespread rain with heavy falls at some places in Odisha from July 19 to 22.

“While the low pressure area over west Jharkhand and adjoining north Chhattisgarh & north interior Odisha has become less marked, another cyclonic circulation is likely to form over Northwest Bay of Bengal within 48 hours, which is expected to intensify into a low pressure and trigger widespread rain in the state,” the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Monday.

The Monsoon Trough is currently passing through Bikaner, Sikar, Orai, Sidhi, Ambikapur, Balasore and thence southeastwards to eastcentral Bay of Bengal, it added.

The highest rainfall of 165.2 mm was recorded in Binika block of Sonepur district in the last 24 hours, rains this week is expected to reduce the deficit significantly in Odisha. “Seasonal cumulative rainfall, realized from June 1 to 17 is 307.8 mm against its normal value of 382.8 mm. During this period, 1 district was in the large deficient category, 14 districts in deficient, 3 in excess & rest 12 districts were in the normal category,” the MeT office tweeted.

According to the midday bulletin, heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) is likely at one or two places in Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Kalahandi and Balangir till 8.30 am on Tuesday (July 18). Heavy rain may also lash one or two places oin Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Boudh, Sonepur, Angul, Deogarh, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda and Sundargarh with light to moderate rain or thundershower at most places in Interior Odisha and at many places in the coastal districts of the state during this period.

The MeT office has issued yellow warning for heavy rain during the next two days.

On July 18, heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is very likely at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam and Puri districts. There is also a forecast for light to moderate rain or thundershower at most places in South Interior Odisha and at many places in remaining districts.

Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) may occur at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Puri, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur and Cuttack on July 19. Light to moderate rain or thundershower may also occur at most places in Coastal Odisha and at many places in interior districts of the state.

The regional centre here said that rainfall activity is expected to further increase from Thursday onwards due to the likely formation of a fresh cyclonic circulation. Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) is likely at one or two places in Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kandhamal, and Kendrapada with heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) in some areas of Bhadrak, Balasore, Jajpur, Cuttack, Khurda, Nayagarh, Gajapati, Dhenkanal, Angul, Boudh, Sonepur, Bolangir, Bargarh and Kalahandi on July 20.

There is a forecast for heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) at one or two places in Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Puri, Angul, Jajpur, Boudh, Sonepur, Sambalpur, Deogarh, and Bargarh. Heavy rain (7 to 11cm) may also occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Kendrapada, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Bolangir, Nuapada and Nabarangpur on July 21.

Light to moderate rain or thundershower is likely to occur at most places in the state on these two days, it added.
