Onion Price To Escalate Further In Coming Days: Minister

Bhubaneswar: While the price of onion has skyrocketed in Odisha, the state government on Tuesday said that it likely to increase further in the coming days.

Talking to mediapersons here, Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare minister Ranendra Pratap Swain said onion is short supply with heavy rain spoiling the crop in neighbouring states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra. “We expect the price of the bulb to further go up by Rs 6-10 as the domestic market completely depends on the price, availability, quality and quantity in these states,” he said.

The minister, however, said that the state government has decided to provide onion at a subsidized rate very soon.

The onion is currently being sold in the open markets at Rs 55 a kg in the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar while in some parts of the state, it is sold at Rs 60 a kg.
