Sundargarh: A woman from Odisha’s Sundargarh was allegedly cheated of Rs 23 lakh in an online fraud.
According to police sources, a fraudster befriended the victim, identified as the wife of a Professor in the district, on Facebook and promised her expensive gifts.
Later, she received a call on her mobile phone from another person, who identified himself as a custom officer from Delhi airport and said that a parcel of costly jewellery in her name has been seized by the department.
To release the costly jewellery, the woman was asked to transfer Rs 23.38 lakh cash online to several bank accounts in Delhi in around 40 phases.
The victim approached the Crime Branch and lodged a written complaint when she did not receive any parcel despite paying such a huge amount.
On the basis of the complainant, a case has been filed and the phone numbers that had been used to call the woman for payment verified.
Further investigation is on, the sources added.
