Balasore: In a good news for non-vegetarian foodies, the cost of Hilsa fish has come down to Rs 250 a kg in Odisha’s Balasore district.
As per reports, Hilsa was sold at Rs 250 to Rs 1,000 per piece depending on the size in the market of Bhogarai in the district for the last two days. The traders of Bhogarai procure the fish from Digha in neighboring West Bengal.
Though Hilsa is a rare catch normally, the fishermen, who had gone for fishing in deep sea on Friday and Saturday, were surprised to find huge haul of Hilsa in their nets. They returned with around 40 ton of Hilsa to the Digha market.
Due to adequate supply of the fish, the rate of Hilsa dropped with the fish weighing more than 1 kg being sold at Rs 1,000 per piece in Bhogarai market. Similarly, Hilsa weighing more than 500 gram cost Rs 550 and those having weight of less than 500 gram at Rs 250 to 300.
According to fishermen, the onset of early monsoon has pushed the Hilsa from the deep sea off the coast of Bangladesh and Myanmar to West Bengal coast. Hilsa hatchlings are normally found in the sea having relatively sweet water due to the confluence of a river, they added.
