Puri: The body of a man was recovered from an open drain in Penthakata DAG Colony under the Sea Beach Police limits in Odisha’s Puri on Thursday.
The deceased, identified as Ranjit Pandey (35), was a native of Bihar’s Motihari district.
According to sources, early on Thursday locals saw the body of a man floating in the drain and informed the Sea Beach Police. The body was recovered and sent for postmortem.
Later the deceased was identified as Ranjit who worked as a daily wager and was assigned the task of installing wire fencing on the boundary wall adjacent to the drain where he was found. Ranjit was reportedly on the job early on Thursday and it is suspected that he fell into the open drain and succumbed. When his body was recovered, he was found wearing hand gloves.
Further investigation is under way. However, locals allege that the authorities are apathetic towards their constant demand to cover the open drains in the city which have claimed many lives recently.
