Bhubaneswar: A day after the Odisha Assembly was adjourned 26 days ahead of schedule, opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress lashed out at the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) government, terming the move ‘undemocratic’.

Describing the Speaker’s decision to adjourn the house only four days after commencement of the session as undemocratic, Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Narasingha Mishra said the move shows that the state government is afraid of the opposition.

Since the BJD government was unable to face the opposition and answer important questions, the House was hurriedly adjourned sine die, Mishra claimed.

Stating that the opposition wanted discussion on many issues, including farmers’ income, regional disparity and paddy procurement to discuss in the House, he said the government got the Assembly adjourned as it wanted to evade questions.

Accusing the government of adopting the policy of escapism, the Congress leader claimed that the ministers were not aware of any bill during discussion in the House.

Stating that the legislators are are answerable to public, Mishra said people want to know as to why the House was adjourned sine die all of a sudden in just four days.

Attacking the government in same vein on the issue, BJP Chief Whip Mohan Charan Majhi said the opposition cooperated with the government for smooth conduct of the House. However, the Speaker adjourned the House sine die citing there is no government business.

While many bills could have been tabled and important issues discussed during zero and question hour during the session, the government acted in a hurried manner, he said, accusing the government of being evasive.
