Organic Farming: Methods Gaining Popularity In Odisha

In an age where diseases caused due to chemicals have become widespread, denizens have started preferring organic products over the so-called promising and alluring chemical based items. Many have even started growing crops in their houses using organic methods of farming.

Odisha farmers are also trying out this new method of farming to reap the benefits. Tulasiram Sahoo, a 45-year-old farmer of Bomak village in Madanpur Rampur block of Kalahandi district is one among the enlightened farmers who is using organic method of farming.

Initially, Sahoo was quite hesitant to try this new method of farming. However, on a friend’s suggestion, he approached the Reliance Foundation Information Services for guidance. Agri-experts at the service centre cleared all his doubts and boosted his confidence by guiding him with the new method of farming.

Now, instead of chemical based fertilisers, Tulasiram is using Panchgavya – a mixture of cow urine, cow dung, jaggery, curd and ghee in his farm. He is using the organic method of farming for cultivating rice, onion, turmeric, brinjal, cauliflower and cotton.

Now, the farmer is trying his hands on earth worm culture and vermi compost also. The service centre is not only guiding him with the various farm practices, but is also helping him in marketing his products. Organic farming has improved the quality of products in Sahoo’s farm and his income too.

Organic farming is  a  farming  practice  that involves  growing and nurturing  crops  without the  use  of  synthetic based  fertilizers and  pesticides . It relies on ecologically balanced agricultural principles like crop rotation, green manure, organic waste and biological pest control. Organic farming yields various vital benefits such as improving soil fertility, soil structure, bio diversity and reducing erosion. Organic practices are bringing a good opportunity with respect to productivity as well as economic efficiency.
