Orissa HC Felicitates Former Chief Justices & Judges To Mark Its 75th Year

Cuttack: The Orissa High Court on Saturday felicitated its former Chief Justices and Judges as a mark of celebration of 75th year of its establishment.

A function, organised on the occasion at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Cuttack, was presided by Justice BR Gavai, Judge of Supreme Court in the presence of S Muralidhar, Chief Justice and the Judges of the High Court.

Advocate General Ashok Kumar Parija, president of High Court Bar Association Dharanidhar Nayak, members of the Bar Association, government officials and the High Court employees attended the function.

Nayak gave the historical account of the establishment of the Orissa High Court and shared the experience of his association with the High Court for the last 45 years. Parija urged the legal fraternity to reaffirm its commitment to the principles of justice, fairness and equality and to strengthen the legal system making it transparent, accessible and accountable.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Justice S Muralidhar said on 26th July, the High Court would achieve an important milestone by completing the 75th year of existence and during the period, the Bar and Bench of Odisha have built an edifice of the foundation of the institution that was laid in 1916 with establishment of the Circuit Bench of Patna High Court at Cuttack.

He paid tributes to Utkal Gaurav Madhusudan Das and Justice Bira Kishore Roy, the first Chief Justice of the High Court. He also acknowledged the contributions of other legal luminaries of Odisha including Utkalamani Gopabandhu Das, Sadasiva Mishra, Rabindranath Sinha, Bibhudendra Mishra, Viswanath Pasayat, Barrister Ranjit Mahanty, Bijoy Pal, Prabir Palit, Ramakanta Mohapatra, Bipin Bihari Ratho and Bijan Behari Ray.

Justice Dipak Misra shared his experiences as a lawyer and a Judge in the High Court and highlighted the importance of Bar as a place of learning of young lawyers.

Justice GB Patnaik, Justice BR Gavai and Justice Biswanath Rath also spoke at the function.
