Over 1.77 Crore Hemp Plants Destroyed By Odisha Police In 2024

Bhubaneswar: In a major achievement, the Odisha Police have successfully destroyed more than 1.77 crore hemp plants as part of their ongoing crackdown on illegal cultivation of marijuana.

The special operation, which concluded in December 2024, saw the destruction of cannabis plants over an area of 15,000 acres, an official press release said on Monday.

Police registered a total of 350 cases related to illegal marijuana cultivation. Four suspects have been arrested in connection with these activities.

Among the districts hit hardest by illegal cannabis cultivation, Boudh recorded the highest number of cases, with 112 cases and over 5,400 acres of cannabis destroyed. In Gajapati, 34 cases were filed, and more than 1,000 acres of illegal cannabis crops were eradicated.

Praising the force for the efforts, Director General of Police (DGP) Y.B. Khurania said the destruction of thousands of acres of illegal cannabis cultivation was a remarkable success. He assured the public that the operation would continue into the coming months, with a focus on areas known for illegal cannabis farming.

A special drive is now underway in Rayagada, Malkangiri, Koraput, Boudh, Kandhamal, Gajapati, Ganjam, and Nabarangpur districts. These regions have been identified as key areas for illegal cannabis trade. The police are using cutting-edge technology, including drones and satellites, to detect and eliminate cannabis plantations. Additionally, inter-departmental collaboration has further strengthened the operation.

The DGP issued a strong warning to illegal cannabis traders, stating that any involvement in marijuana cultivation will result in strict legal action.
