Over 11K Consumers Reach Zero Electricity Bills Amid Rooftop Solar Boom In W Odisha

Burla: TP Western Odisha Distribution Limited (TPWODL), the joint venture between Tata Power and the Odisha government, recorded its highest monthly rooftop solar installations yet in July, connecting 8,298 systems across western Odisha.

Of these, 3,395 came under the central government’s PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, while 4,903 were installed through the company’s Utility-Led Aggregation (ULA) model. The July total surpassed the previous monthly peak of 5,373 systems set in May 2026. The ULA figure alone also marked a new high, exceeding the earlier ULA record of 3,518 installations from the same month.

TPWODL CEO Parveen Verma described the result as a major milestone that reflects rising consumer confidence in rooftop solar. “This achievement is the result of strong consumer participation and the sustained efforts of our field teams, Renewable Energy Officers and partners,” he said.

“More importantly, the growing number of consumers benefiting from zero electricity bills demonstrates the tangible value that rooftop solar can deliver to households. We will continue to simplify adoption and support more households across Western Odisha in becoming part of India’s clean energy transition,” he added.

Nuapada district posted the strongest performance in July with 1,509 installations, edging past its own earlier record of 1,489 set in May. The district now has 7,643 rooftop solar consumers in total, of which 5,519 were installed under the ULA model, the highest ULA tally among all districts.

Overall, TPWODL has enabled 45,103 rooftop solar consumers across its network as of the end of July, including 17,063 under the ULA route. Baragada leads with 7,823 consumers, followed by Nuapada (7,643) and Sundaragada (6,651).

The company further noted that the surge in installations is already delivering clear financial gains. A total of 11,236 consumers — 8,257 under the PM Surya Ghar scheme and 2,979 through ULA — have reached zero electricity bills.
