Bhubaneswar: More than 2.2 lakh nominations have been filed for the three-tier panchayat elections in the state as the process came to end on Friday.
According to a release of secretary, State Election Commission, as many as 65,828 nominations were filed for ward member posts and 14,074 papers for sarpanch posts in the gram panchayats across the state on the last day of filing the nominations.
Similarly, 12,512 sets of papers were filed by the aspiring candidates for panchayat samiti member posts and 2,191 nominations for Zilla Parishad member posts on the day.
At the end of the day, total 2,29,062 nominations have been filed for the elections. While 1,62,297 sets of papers have been filed for ward member posts, 34,613 nominations filed for sarpanch, 28,153 for panchayat samiti and 3,999 nominations for Zilla Parishad member posts.
The process of filing the nomination papers started on January 17 as per the SEC schedule. The scrutiny of papers will be done on January 22. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is January 25 and the final list of candidates will be declared on January 25.
The panchayat elections will be held in five phases from February 16 to 24. Results will be declared on February 26, 27 and 28.
