Bhubaneswar: More than 20 lakh vehicles will be scrapped by March 15 as a part of the Odisha government’s Vehicle Scrapping Policy, Transport Minister Tukuni Sahu told the Assembly on Thursday.

A total of 20,39,500 vehicles, including  12,99,351 two-wheelers, which have completed 15 years and lack fitness will be scrapped under the policy aimed at reducing vehicular pollution, she said while replying to a question by BJP MLA Kusum Tete.

Currently, 80,20,500 vehicles having fitness are plying in the state, she added.

According to norms, scrap value for the old vehicles will be given by the scrapping centre at approximately six per cent of the ex-showroom price prevailing at the time of scrapping. The government will provide a concession in the motor vehicle tax if the owner decides to purchase a similar type of vehicle.

The state is also offering incentives to the investors, who will set up Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facilities (RVSF) in Odisha. The RVSFs will be treated as industrial units and a number of benefits, including provision of government land at a concessional rate, will be provided as per industrial policy resolution (IPR)-2022 to establish the facilities.
